The Honest Answer: It Depends on the Company Type
Indian job seekers often ask whether cover letters are worth the effort. The answer is genuinely contextual — and getting the context right saves you significant time and improves your application strategy.
When a Cover Letter Is NOT Worth Your Time
- Applications to large IT services companies through their recruitment portals (TCS NextStep, Infosys InfyTQ, Wipro Careers) — high volume, automated shortlisting
- Job applications where the portal makes the cover letter optional and marks the field as non-mandatory
- Roles where your resume keywords already clearly match the job description — let the resume carry the weight
When a Cover Letter Meaningfully Increases Your Chances
- Applications to product-based startups with fewer than 500 employees — founders and engineering managers often read applications personally
- Any role in product management, business development, marketing, consulting, or writing — where communication ability is the primary skill being assessed
- International companies (US, EU, Singapore) hiring for India-based roles — cover letters are standard in these hiring cultures
- Cold outreach emails to hiring managers at target companies — here the cover letter IS the email, and it absolutely matters
- Roles with a visible "Note to hiring manager" or similar field in the application — filling this thoughtfully when others leave it blank is a significant differentiator
The 3-Paragraph Cover Letter Structure That Gets Read
Paragraph 1 — The Opening (specific, not generic)
Most cover letters open with: "I am writing to apply for the Software Engineer position at [Company Name]." This adds no information the recruiter doesn't already know. Instead, open with a specific hook:
- A specific fact about the company that shows you've done genuine research: "I've been following Razorpay's engineering blog since your series on database migration at scale — specifically your post on the online schema change strategy for MySQL at 500M TPS."
- A direct connection between your most relevant achievement and the role's core requirement: "In my last role, I reduced our payment API's p99 latency from 340ms to 89ms. When I read that [Company]'s SRE team is focused on checkout performance at scale, this role stood out as the most direct application of that work I've seen."
Paragraph 2 — Your Strongest, Most Relevant Achievement
One achievement, fully told, with specifics. Not a list of everything you've done. The recruiter can see your resume for that. Use the X-Y-Z format: what you built or achieved, the measurable outcome, and the specific method or technology. Keep it to 3–4 sentences.
Paragraph 3 — The Close (confident, not desperate)
Don't close with "I hope to hear from you soon" or "I would be very grateful for the opportunity." These phrases signal uncertainty. Close confidently: "I'm happy to walk through the technical details of this work in an interview and discuss how it maps to [specific team or product challenge you know about]. I'm available [general timeframe] and can be reached at [email/phone]."
The Cold Outreach Cover Letter (Email Format)
When emailing a hiring manager or recruiter directly (not through a portal), the structure changes slightly:
- Subject line: "[Role] — [Your Name] — [One specific credential or achievement]" e.g. "SDE-2 Application — Arjun Mehta — 5 years Go backend, ex-Swiggy"
- Email body: 4–6 sentences maximum. Who you are, what you've done, why this company specifically, and the ask (a 15-minute call or to share your resume for review)
